When we saw pictures of what looked like a super indulgent bowl online, we just had to give it a try.
Sushi Jin (by Les Amis Group) is tucked away slightly off the beaten track at One Farrer Hotel & Spa near Little India, And when we arrived, we were seated at the bar counter normally reserved for guests ordering the omakase.
We decided to go big with the Wagyu Don, which contained pan-seared wagyu beef with onsen egg over rice, but with an additional topping of uni. They informed us that this would cost us more than $90, up from the original $35 for just the bowl of wagyu rice. It seemed a bit pricey to me, but we decided to go ahead anyway as that was what we came here to try. When it arrived, I must admit, I was rather disappointed at the portion size. The portion was definitely much smaller than most rice bowls, although the ingredients used were top-notch. The wagyu was fatty and melted on the tongue with great flavour, and the foie gras was chopped up just the right size to complement the topping of uni and drizzle of truffle soy sauce. Combined with the burst runny egg yolk, this was definitely a real treat for the tastebuds, all that rich flavour exploding in our mouths.
We also went with the Hokkaido Don ($36) — featuring fresh scallop, ikura and uni. The ingredients were fresh but again, quite disappointingly small for the price. The Truffle Seafood Chawanmushi ($!5) delicious and helped round off the meal. The egg custard smooth, tasty and topped with crab, prawns and shaved truffle.
Overall, no real complaints about the quality of the food and it was quite a pleasant meal. But I still thought it was quite overpriced and you can easily get the same quality at other restaurants for much less. We actually came off feeling still not quite as full as we could be. Give it a try but be prepared to shell out quite a bit to feel satisfied.
