Review: Sushi Goshin by Akashi at Suntec Singapore

We passed Sushi Goshin owned by the Akashi Group of Restaurants quite by accident while searching for a quick bite before a movie at Suntec City, and was surprised to find this casual Japanese restaurant had quite an upmarket feel to it. The woody decor and interior together with waitresses clad in kimonos gave it a classy touch and even the entrance seemed slightly intimidating for a casual restaurant. But while I usually don’t expect very much from casual dining spots by way of quality sashimi, this place does exceed expectations somewhat with the freshness of its sushi and sashimi.

Overall: ★★★☆☆
Price: $$ – $$$

The sushi price starts at $1.00 per piece while sashimi begins at $3.60, in general placing it on the mid to high range for casual restaurants. We started off ordering (from an iPad) this Aburi Foie Gras sushi and some Aburi Hotate sushi together with some Spicy Salmon maki rolls.

The foie gras was decent, seared nicely on the top and it melted well on the tongue and the scallop was also fresh and with a firm texture. The downside was they torched the rice as well and it left a bitter, charred aftertaste in the mouth.

I also ordered the Chawanmushi which had a perfectly smooth texture and the Hokkaido Rice Bowl which included fresh sliced salmon, slivers of uni, some hotate, amaebi (sweet shrimp) and ikura topped with wasabi and ginger slices.

I didn’t expect much from the bowl but this was decent and the ingredients were fresh although it would be nice to get a little more scallop and amaebi on there.

And finally, we ended the meal off sharing a sushi platter that included cuts of fresh fish, tamago and some maki as well.

Overall, Sushi Goshin is priced higher than most casual Japanese restaurants but is generally still quite affordable. Nothing quite stood out for me but in general you do get fresh ingredients of decent quality so it might be worth it shot if you’re in the area.
