Review: Goen Udon — Most Value-for-Money Katsu Curry in Singapore?

Here’s a quick lunch recommendation for days you want something satisfying (and that’s an understatement because this Katsu Curry Rice is colossal) and yet totally easy on the pockets. Here’s my pick for probably the best Katsu Curry Don you can have on a budget and at lightning speed.

Overall: ★★★★☆
Price: $

Strangely enough, this gem of a find is born in an udon noodle stall — Goen Japanese Udon Noodles at Wisma Atria’s Food Republic at Level 4. While you don’t get the comfort of enjoying this in a quiet restaurant, here’s the real clincher. This huge portion that is honestly enough for two grown men costs a grand total of $6.80. No, it’s not a typo.

And the impressive thing is for the price, you expect lower quality meat, slightly soggy pre-fried chops and powdery curry. But it was none of those things. The meat was substantial, fried a beautifully-crispy, juicy golden brown and drowned in generous pools of delicious, thick brown curry.

I’ve been meaning to go back and try the curry udon which I hear is also very popular, but I just can’t get round not ordering the Katsu Curry Don. If you’re in the area, also try the Red Ring Treasures Cutlet Noodles. The chops, chili and giant fried onion rings are to-die-for.

Now go forth and feast!
