Review: Fyr Cycene Ond Drinc Brunch, Boon Tat St

First things first. “What’s up with the name no one can pronounce?”, you ask.

I asked the same thing, and here’s what it is. FYR CYCENE OND DRINC is gaelic for Fire Kitchen and Drink and as its name suggests is going for a throwback to the days of yore with walls filled with scratchy murals and kitschy designs.

I decided to take mom down to sample their brunch menu to see how it compares to the usual formulaic Eggs Benny-waffles-pancakes brunch they serve up in all the cafes in Singapore.

All in all, for the brunch:

Overall: ★★★☆☆
Price: $$ – $$$

We kicked things off with this Grilled Squid ($12) in turmeric, garlic, crispy onion and lime leaves.

Loved the flavours on this one, but sadly the squid was way too tough and chewy. My teeth actually hurt after awhile despite how good it tastes. Pity.

We were served two basketfuls of Yam & Sweet Potato fries ($8) each which came with some cheese sauce and tomato salsa. These were amazing and had a wonderful crunch and flavour. These over potato fries anyday. Mom and I couldn’t stop popping these!

Our first Main was the Baked Beef Hash ($18).

With a crispy spring onion crepe smothered with juicy tender ribeye, corned beef, potatoes and drenched in runny egg, this was a wonderfully hearty dish that can get quite heavy so do share. Otherwise, this was a refreshing change from the usual full breakfast fry-up.

Their salmon dish came highly recommended, so we tried the Baked Blinis ($15).

This comes with grilled salmon, Avruga caviar and some grated Bottarga. The salmon was alright but I liked the nice touch of eggs, ikura and caviar. The blini was soft and fluffy and went well overall salty flavours of the dish.

And finally, one of the more interesting desserts I’ve come across in the last few months, the Baked Pistachio Melt and Pandan Ice-Cream ($10).

I really enjoyed this dessert. It was rich, sweet and had an amazing combination of flavours in a local twist to the belly-warming lava cake. My mom found it a tad overwhelming and sweet but if you’ve got a sweet tooth, I reckon you’ll adore it.
