Not many buffets in Singapore prize quality over quantity. So when we came across this goodie, we knew we had to share.
Nestled in Park Hotel Alexandra is one of the more underrated restaurants serving up sizzling premium roasts and quality meat at very affordable prices. The Carvery is set by the poolside on the seventh floor of the hotel, and has a comfortable, casual dining ambience that’s great for families and a meal with friends alike.
At just $62++ (Fri/Sat), you don’t just get wonderful grilled meats. You also get a free-flow of fresh oysters, seafood like mussels, prawns, your pick of the salad bar and soups for appetisers.
Upon walking in, you’ll notice a dramatic 3-metre long carving station showcasing 3-4 top quality cuts of beef, chicken, pork and lamb with roasting ovens and rotisserie in the back. An experienced carve is always at the station ready to recommend and serve you your preferred cuts.
One of my favourite parts of the selection was definitely the Yorkshire Pudding. This is hands-down one of the best I’ve had in Singapore and it’s baked a beautiful golden brown, with a gorgeous buttery flavour. It’s also flaky and crispy on the outside while fluffy and soft on the inside. It holds gravy so well and is the perfect side for all that meat. I wolfed down 3 of these without any guilt.
If you’re spoilt for choice with the meats, I recommend the most popular Beef Prime Rib. This is and Australian Prime Rib that is dry-aged, lightly rubbed with salt and pepper and roasted slowly for 8 hours at a controlled temperature. I loved mine with truffle butter and red wine jus.
Another must-try is the Rotisserie Chicken. I half expected these to be bland and dry since they were cooked for 10-12 hours before roasting on a spit. But these birds were really juicy, tender and retained all the flavour despite being cooked for ages! Go for the thigh or drumstick, and drown these in chicken gravy, anchovy butter and truffle salt.
One of the reasons the meat was so enjoyable is because of this — an abundant selection of sauces, salts and butters including condiments like horseradish, mustard, olives, pickles and capers. So go nuts trying the different combinations and get creative!
Apart from the appetisers and the meats, they also dish up various sides of mash, sauteed vegetables and so on. If you’re not already full to bursting point on the delicious meats, they also do wood-fired thin-crusted pizzas, pastas and assorted breads.
If you still have space for desserts, go for the Spiced Apple Crumble and English Trifle (save the rest of that stomach space for the meats).
Overall, this is definitely great value-for-money given the quality and effort that goes into making the meats so delectable. The buffet spread also offers quite a lot of variety although I would fork out the full amount just for the meat.
The Carvery charges $38++ for lunch and $52++ for dinners on Sundays to Thursdays. Dinner on Fridays and Saturdays is $62++ as additional premium cuts are incluced in the line-up (including oysters).
