Review: Tatsuya, Goodwood Park Hotel

Tatsuya will always have a special place in my heart. It’s where Sean and I had our first proper date almost four years ago, and that omakase dinner was very memorable. I just loved the simple, elegant ambience where you could watch the army of chefs working their magic with fresh produce. But I’d always been curious about what lunch there would be like. And so, with my lovely mom in tow, we decided to try it out.

Overall: ★★★★☆
Price: $$$$

The counter seats are always the best place to watch your meal getting prepared. It’s all a well-oiled machine. From a junior chef deftly slicing paper-thin sheets of radish, to the head chef calling out orders, and carving up the freshest fish of the day into slices for sashimi platters and sushi plates. Others were working the blow torch for the aburi sushi with relish. All very exciting stuff.

We decided to go with the Bento Lunch sets. I went with the Sashimi Bento ($45).

Most of the bento sets come with mixed tempura, salad, miso soup, chawanmushi (egg custard) rice, pickles and fruit. The sashimi was fresh and included salmon, hamachi (yellowtail), scallop, and mekajiki (swordfish).

Mommy dearest had the Sashimi Unajyu Bento ($45).

This one was actually very similar to the sashimi bento, just with a couple slices less sashimi but had the sushi rice topped with slices of grilled Unagi (eel). If you ask me, this might be more value for money if you’re a fan of unagi, because you’re pretty much getting the same thing as the sashimi set with an added bonus of eel. Yummy!

And then of course there was the Sushi Lunch Set ($90). This was a delicious selection of aburi (half-cooked) fish slices included tuna, salmon, scallops and other white fish. Loved the mentaiko over the sushi that gave it that extra creaminess and extra umami flavour as well.

Overall, Tatsuya does not disappoint. It can come off a bit price-y for lunch, but you pay for quality and an elegant, soothing ambience. For special occasions, most definitely. But once in awhile, why not treat yourself?
