Review: Nakajima Suisan Grilled Fish, Ngee Ann City

Grilled fish has always been one of mum’s favourite foods, and even more so now that she’s on chemo. All that fish oil and Omega 3 is really great for the heart, skin and prevents inflammation. So, how could we not try what’s been touted the best grilled codfish in Singapore?

Overall: ★★★★1/2 Excellent, fresh grilled fish. Worth the wait.

Nakajima Suisan is tucked away in a corner of Ngee Ann City’s B2 Food Court area. Be warned, though. The place is so popular that if you head down at lunchtime, you could queue for as long as 1 hour for a table and food.

Quick Tip: Around 1145am on a weekday is a great time to go, as the place hasn’t yet filled up and you’ll get a seat easily.

First up, introducing their specialty Mero Saikyo Set ($16.50).

The Sea Bass is marinated with Saikyo, which is a sweet golden miso.

The flesh has a super luxurious mouth feel and is more flaky than Gindara (or Black Cod).

Which is another one of their more popular sets. The Gindara Teriyaki Set ($12.50) is absolutely mouthwatering if you’re a fan of the slightly sweeter mirin and soy glaze.

The fish is less flaky, but much more tender, juicy and fatty than the Mero in my opinion. It has a wonderful melt-in-your-mouth quality. Absolutely delicious.

Mummy loves her Grilled Salmon Head ($10.50), and so we got one a la carte for her to try.

She claims this is way more fresh than the ones she had in Sushi Tei or other Japanese restaurants. And it was so good, she totally cleaned it out on top of finishing her Mero!

Nakajima Suisan’s most affordable set would be the Saba Shioyaki Set ($8.50).

But it’s pocket-friendly price tag is definitely no indication of its quality. I enjoyed this tremendously. It was grilled to golden brown crispiness on the outside, while leaving the inside moist and flavourful. Excellent!

All sets come with salad, rice, side dish, miso soup and free re-fillable hot genmaicha. And there is no service charge.

Definitely recommend this place for fresh, quality, delicious fish! The only downside is the queue. But hey, good things come to those who wait. Itadakimasu!
